How We Work

Working with us is simple. It is just like working with your own sales staff - minus the headaches. The people who sell your magazine carry your business card, attend your sales meetings, and become experts in your publication - but you do not have to carry them on your payroll. The people who manage them are not in your headcount either, so there are no HR issues.

Your fixed costs are much lower too. All of these people work in our offices, so you do not have to rent office space for them, or lease computer equipment and infrastructure, or provide supplies. It's all part of our service.

When you need marketing, graphics, and research expertise, we can provide those services through in-house capabilities that rival those of many publishing companies.

Because we are optimized for national sales and can do it all for you, there is no need for you to maintain relationships with multiple independent representative companies, who all have their own ways of doing business. Also, many publishers are able to flatten their organization and save on support staff salaries, while getting more and better sales results.

Capabilities

The James G. Elliott Co., Inc. is designed to meet or exceed the capabilities of publishers' direct operations, building on elements like these:
  • Traditional offices - All sales offices are located in business districts in New York, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
     
  • Sufficient staffing - Our account managers only represent one or two titles.
     
  • Training - Our entire sales staff has been trained in Web sales.
     
  • Testing - All employees are required to undergo psychological and skills testing prior to employment.
     
  • Technological edge - Our systems include a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and a unified national VoIP telecom system to enhance communications, and our own IT staff ensures reliable network operations, appropriate PC and Macintosh platforms, etc.
     
  • Flexibility - We adapt to our clients' technological systems, and are currently working with several different advertising management systems.
     
  • Reporting - We provide regular progress reports and accurate account information to help with forecasting.
     
  • Research - we can provide research services including syndicated and proprietary research.
     
  • Graphics - we can provide design services including media kits, collateral material, etc. as required.
     
  • Small space and classified sales - We can provide telemarketing sales and billing, and, where appropriate, credit card processing through our own merchant accounts.

We can and do provide consulting on a separate contract basis.

Jim Elliott has over 30 years experience in the advertising industry. Before founding the James G. Elliott Co., Inc. in 1984, he held numerous executive positions, including Director of Field Services at CBS Magazines and Western Advertising Manager for Road & Track Magazine. Mr. Elliott has also been the president of the Magazine Representative Association of Southern California, currently is chairman of the board of the Don Bosco Technical Institute and serves on several industry boards and committees.

Dennis Connaughton has over 30 years experience in the advertising business. He has 20 years of experience at all levels of account management at three major U.S. advertising agencies, including holding the position of Management Supervisor for the Chevrolet account. Mr. Connaughton is a former publisher of Times Mirror Magazines Field & Stream Magazine and has been the General Manager of the James G. Elliott Co., Inc. for 7 years.

June Lough has over 22 years experience in the magazine industry. She was Marketing Director of Creative Services and a Sales Development Director at Kiplinger's Personal Finance. Previously, she was a Marketing Manager for Magazine Services Inc. (a subsidiary of Kiplinger's) that provided sales representation for multiple magazines. She has done marketing/creative work for Kiplinger's, MyBusiness, Ivy League Network, Private Clubs, Movieline, Budget Travel, and many others.

Susan Bunting has over 17 years experience in sales and marketing.  She has sold national consumer, trade and retail custom publications throughout her sales career.  Her background also includes marketing management in the package foods and software industries. Ms. Bunting has been with the James G. Elliott Company since 2000 and currently is the Sales Director for the Midwest market.  She is a member of the Chicago Magazine Association.
